Probe Group Releases First Schnee-Tumollilo Report: The End Of The Landline Business, Can Service Providers Adapt?

(PRLEAP.COM) CEDAR KNOLLS, NJ - The ubiquity of wireless service and the migration of young users, from TV to video games and the Internet, will help bring an end to traditional telco and cable business models. The new Schnee-Tumolillo Report from Probe Group, "Redefining the Service Provider Industry: The Shape of Things to Come", sheds light on the revolutionary change taking place in the telecom industry and the impact of change on existing service providers.

The key to the current telco business model is a monopoly hold on infrastructure and a uni-dimensional service offering, voice. "Access is no longer a monopoly, with cable broadband, mobile, and soon, a mass market for fixed wireless as well," comments Allan Tumolillo, COO of Probe Group. "The underlying business model for landline telephony has formally ceased to exist and the stock markets no longer have faith in this sector."

The cable market is likely to enter into a prolonged downward spiral as well. "The challenges of satellite delivery and the aging out of the TV market, with youth focusing on the Internet and video games, will undermine the core business models of much of the cable industry," Tumolillo continued.

Demographics and new technology, particularly the spread of IP networking, are leading the market away from the legacy telecommunications business. "The accumulation of changes in the industry and society, in demand and what drives demand, in pricing models and what people value now as opposed to what they valued even only a few years ago, will force a wrenching restructuring of the industry," Victor Schnee, Probe’s CEO, concluded.

Probe Group’s new quarterly series, "The Schnee-Tumolillo Report," offers high-level, quality analysis of significant changes affecting the telecom industry. The first issue, "Redefining the Service Provider Industry: The Shape of Things to Come," examines the traditional business models of the telco and cable industries, and the demographic and technological changes that are making these models obsolete.
