Kids Inspire Congress

(PRLEAP.COM) SAN DIEGO, CA – A mural created by San Diego school children to inspire their elected leaders goes on display in the U.S. House of Representatives next week. Kids Can Do, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering children, helped students from two San Diego schools express their faith in democracy through artwork. Hundreds of colorful pictures drawn by students frame the words "We Believe In You’.

Congressman Randy Cunningham arranged for the mural to be hung in the foyer of the Rayburn Building on March 18-19. Cunningham’s staff met with Kids Can Do members last December at a City Hall reception honoring the "We Believe In You’ mural. After learning of the children’s year-long quest to share their inspirational mural with Congress, Cunningham offered to set up the display as a special event.

Twelve members of Kids Can Do, ages 11 to 13, will travel to Washington D.C. to see their mural on display, meet with Congressman Cunningham, and visit congressional offices to raise awareness about their project. Seventh-grader Tricia Decker wants Congress to create permanent display space dedicated to children’s projects so that all American children can have an opportunity to share ideas and opinions with national leaders. "The decisions politicians make not only affect their own generation, but our generation and generations still to come,’ she explained. "Kids really do believe in democracy. We should have a way to show our national leaders that.’ Senator Barbara Boxer, Congressman Bob Filner, and Congresswoman Susan Davis have expressed interest in the project.

The Kids Can Do "We Believe In You" mural was created in February 2003. The first public showing took place on the third floor of the state capitol building in March 2003, sponsored by Assemblywoman Christine Kehoe. City Councilman Scott Peters arranged for the mural to hang in the lobby of the City Administration Building last December. The "We Believe In You’ project has given the children of Kids Can Do a unique opportunity to work directly with elected officials and learn first-hand how their government works.

Kids Can Do® is a non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation that inspires children to find kid-shaped solutions to serious problems affecting community, democracy, and the environment. For more information, visit their website at www.kids-can-do.org.
